Songs of Summer – Reminiscing Bob Seger

I guess it’s just common practice as we grow older that we reflect on what to us were ‘the good ol’ days’….which is certainly different from what our parents or grandparents would recall from their own era, as each generation makes their own memories.  1977 to 1980 were very impressionable teenage years for me…I was certainly a rebel, causing my mom and dad to probably get a few gray hairs or even lose some over my juvenile antics.  Even so, in retrospect, those days and the music that filled my mind and ears were fun times indeed.  As I now sit in my home looking out on the cold and fresh fallen late February snow of about 4 to 5 inches, I think back to those days of my youth...you know, that time when you thought you knew EVERYTHING? What comes to mind were those hot Summer days and warm nights…those ones that seemed to last forever…you remember those, don’t you? Ahhh….those days before the hair/glam metal bands of the 80’s that I have come to adore.  There were so many great bands then, ones that fit right in with the rebellious attitude of my late high school years. But then also, there were ones that appealed to my ‘softer’ side.

For some reason, Bob Seger’s songs remind me of summertime.  It seems hard to believe he’s nearly 70 years old now! *sigh* Where has the time gone? ‘Ain’t it funny how the ‘night moves’’? Due to the longevity of Mr. Seger’s career which spans 1969 to the present, I can only hi-light some of his career with this blog.  My favorite tune, one that always ‘takes me back’ is ‘Main Street’ (1977).  I’ve often wondered how many streets across the U.S. are named Main Street?  So, to satisfy my curiosity,  I ‘Googled’ it.  Not much help…I found a number from 1993, so that’s over 20 years ago…but it was 9,898.  Hmmm….well…ok.  Seems a little low to me…I’m sure a ton more are in existence today.  It seems every Seger album released had numerous ‘A’ side material…so much good rock ‘n roll! From this band’s inception in 1969/70 as ‘The Bob Seger System’…a tad before my time, to simply ‘Bob Seger’ in 1971-75 and 2006-14, and then, probably the most well-known name and the one I am familiar with, ‘Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band’, 1976 to 1995…tune after tune just seemed to be a hit!  Even those probably ‘less popular’ ones like ‘The Fire Down Below’, ‘Feel Like A Number’, and numerous other ones seemed to share their moments of radio play time, and I still hear them on the radio today.

Main Street Video Link

There was something about his lyrics…how the words just seemed to relate to reality, and gave insight  into life on the road as a rock star of that time.  Songs certainly tell a story, each individual to a moment or circumstance that many people can grasp.  Even then, long hair on a man was not widely acceptable, as was mentioned in the song ‘Turn the Page’… ‘Most times you can't hear 'em talk, other times you can, All the same old cliches, "Is that a woman or a man?"…And you always seem outnumbered, you don't dare make a stand…’  Getting back to ‘Main Street’…I think the meandering tempo and the saxophone seems to place you right there with him…walking along, taking in the sights and sounds of a small town.  Reminiscent of a era gone by…the young, sweet dancer, the hustler in the pool hall….just drift back in time, and find your feet….down on Main Street…..ahhh, yes indeed.  Memories…

Mr. Seger just has a way of relating to others on a common level….’Still The Same’ (1978), ‘Night Moves’ (1976), ‘Against The Wind’ (1980), ‘Like A Rock’ (1986) and so many others, have left a musical trail of over 50 million copies…16 studio albums, 2 live albums, 5 compilation LP’s, 60 plus singles…7 multi-platinum, 4 platinum and 2 gold...what a lifetime achievement!  You can check out his website to catch-up and keep up with his band… www.bobseger.com and of course, his social media page via FaceBook… https://www.facebook.com/bobseger. A true American rock icon….so much more could be said.  Thanks for the memories, Bob!

Local Band Review: Jambox - A Second Helping (Saturday, January 17th - Drifty's Sports Pub)

Ya know, I think some 80’s looks are coming back…I’ve heard rumor at least and I’m seeing more gals sporting the bigger hair…and well, as far as threads go, anything is game in the wardrobe arena these days…you like it, you can find it, you can wear it!  Jambox is the hot new band on the Indy scene that’s doing their share of keeping the 80’s r ‘n r in the spotlight.  This is my second time to catch them play, and it was just as good as the first, if not better!  This is also my second time to blog on them, because I’d like to share a bit more information for their fans, as they are quickly developing a loyal following.  Saturday night (January 17, 2015) found them rocking the South side of Indy at Drifty’s Sport Pub on East Stop 11 Road.  You know it’s going to be a fun night when the place is packed early!  Time to parrrrr…..teeee….!

You can’t get much more 80’s style than with Journey tunes, and this is a given for these guys! Lead vocalist Eric Rozens belts out these melodies like he’s related to the original Journey lead man Steve Perry.  Opening with ‘Any Way You Want It’, it didn’t take too long in the evening to start packing the dance floor.  80’s music was great for getting your groove on!  Jambox is fast filling their club dates, so you will have plenty of opportunity to follow them around the local Indy scene, as no town in Indiana seems to be off limits.  These guys just got together late last Spring, as ’just friends’, since they were all playing in other bands at that time. They have certainly made their mark and are leaving a great lasting impression all the way around.  These guys got it!

If some of them seem familiar to you, it’s probably because they are.  Eric was vocalist in a band called ‘Backlash’ back in the ‘Schoolboy Crush’ (SBC) days.  Jeff and Rusty also hail from SBC.  Ritchie has jammed with numerous artists and was in Simon Bar Sinister (with Donnie St. Thomas, after he was in SBC), playing with Roxie (Ralph from Q95) in a band called ‘Password Reset’.  Dave and Rusty played with ‘Rainmaker’ back in the day, and both were with the band ‘The Big Time’ when they started jamming with the Jambox boys. You can’t get much better experience than that!

Changing up the playlist to keep it fresh, the night’s songs included: ‘All Of My Love’ – Led Zeppelin; ‘Owner of A Lonely Heart’ – Yes; ‘Everybody Wants You’ – Billy Squier’; ‘Runaway’ – Bon Jovi (which featured keyboardist Dave’s talent); ‘Hold The Line’ – Toto; ‘Jump’ – Van Halen; ‘Never Been Any Reason’ – Head East; ‘Hot Legs’ – Rod Stewart and many more during two rockin’ sets.  Twenty-first century technology and social media is a great resource for local bands these days in helping to get the most current news out.  These guys have some great merchandise you can order from their website (http://www.jamboxindy.com) such as t-shirts, ball caps, stocking hats and keychains, all sporting that great Jambox logo.  Also stop by and ‘like’ their FaceBook page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jambox/636044193176640

Jambox is:

Eric Rozens – lead vocals
Ritchie Wilkison – guitar
Jeff Ellison – bass
Dave Lucid – keyboards
Rusty Scutt – drums

Sound – Mike Champlin
Lights – Robert Horner

So, what about original music? Well, it’s in the ‘talking stage’…according to front man Eric, “(we) may do (it) at some point, but (it is) nothing we are actively pursuing at this time.”  If you have not yet had opportunity to see these guys, mark them on your ‘must see’ list! Get to know them….say ‘hey’.  They’re friendly, fun, down to earth and extremely musically talented. You will not be disappointed.  Tune in the Jambox and turn it up…like a boomerang you’ll need a repeat!

Hellwagon - Indy Band Review - Ro's Bar & Grill - Greenfield

Can heavy metal music exist without hair….long hair, lots of hair? Uh….no…it’s metal, c’mon! It makes for better pictures anyway, right Bill? So, if orange is the new black, then Hellwagon is the new crazy train…all aboard! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!  Just when you believe you’ve got it all figured out, you realize otherwise.  You think ‘metalmania’, and then you hear something that makes you stop and think ‘really’? I did some double checks myself.

Hey, stop by, check out and 'like' Hellwagon's Facebook page:
Hellwagon comes right out of the rock and roll gate with a KISS classic ‘Detroit Rock City’, followed by AC/DC (my personal favorite rockers) ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’ (later adding ‘Highway To Hell’).  And certainly, you can’t do rock up right without some Led Zeppelin, ‘Good Times, Bad Times’.  I always like to include those songs that you don’t typically hear out at the club.  It is those selections that bring diversity to the show.  I’m always ‘observing’ the patrons when I go out, I study their body language, their facial expressions.  Perhaps that sounds odd, but that is to me an indicator of whether they are enjoying their evening.  This Saturday night at Ro’s was certainly being appreciated by many.

Hellwagon is:
Tony Diekhoff - vocals
Craig (aka: Shred) Young - guitar/vocals
Greg Lockhart - lead guitar/vocals
Stacey Ely - drums
Brian Coleman - bass guitar
Claude Brissart - lights and sound

So, when was the last time I heard Pat Travers ‘Snortin’ Whiskey’? It’s been a long while! ‘Bathroom Wall’ is classic late 80’s Faster Pussycat material.  Add in The Four Horsemen ‘Rockin’ Is Ma Business’ and you can see where this is going.  Did I say heavy metal? Black Foot, ‘Train, Train’, Judas Priest ‘You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’’, Motorhead, ‘Ace of Spades’….that is definitely throw back….like way back to my later high school years…I’d forgotten all about that band…wow….R-N’-R memory lane for sure, guys! Then throw in a few that I certainly would not have expected…The Commodores ‘Brick House’, Wild Cherry ‘Play That Funky Music’ and….oh my…..Johnny Cash ‘Ring of Fire’….really? Did I say heavy metal? LOL
By the way, ‘cuse me, Tony, but WTH is a blunkin, or maybe that’s blumpkin? I didn’t realize there was such an issue with them out in Hancock County.  Maybe I’m not spelling that right, but I ‘Googled’ it, and didn’t find it…so, I’m thinkin’ they don’t exist? Sorry guys, just sayin’! But thank you for your concern about everybody’s safety, that is important! Hellwagon's current line-up of bandmates has been together about two months, but HW itself about one year.  All come from previous 'bands of the past', in case you thought perhaps you recognize a face or a name.
Nazareth ‘Hair of the Dog’ certainly qualifies as mid-70’s Scottish hard rock, but would you expect tunes from Journey or Lynyrd Skynyrd….did I say heavy metal? So at the end of the night when you’ve had your socks rocked off in ways perhaps you could not have imagined….you’ll be sayin’….’well, that was one helluva ride!’ Kickin’ and screamin’ all the way….Hellwagon? Hell yeah!

Audio Hitmen - Indy Band Review - Southport Bar & Grill

Audio Hitmen is an all-star cast of characters from the likes of Recoil, Damn Dirty Apes, 5 Monkey Fury Social Deviants and ...Who's Boxin' Featuring Skinnyballs Balboa!. Unlike most cover bands, they don't play every over-played song you hear on the radio 15 times a day. The Hitmen have taken time to carefully select songs most people know but forgot how awesome they are! Even taking some old classics and rockin' them up a bit. Suffice it to say, bring your dancin' shoes and air guitars. You'll want to do both when you spend an evening with Audio Hitmen!
(direct quote from the band's FaceBook page)

Alex "Turbo" Torres - VOX
Marc "MAFA" Kiefer - Lead Fiddler
Dave "Donkey" Conn - Rhythm Fiddler
Jason "Sausage Fingers" Oldham - How Low!
"Drop Dead" Danny Taylor - keepin' time

Genre: rock, classic rock, alternative

Every once-in-a-while, somebody comes along that stands out in the crowd, someone who perhaps 'dares' to do something different, kind of mix-up what's considered 'the norm'. It is typical with local cover bands to hit up on performing the more popular (or what I call 'side A') songs, because that seems to be what club patrons like to hear.  So, how could I describe to you, my blog readers local rockers 'Audio Hitmen'? Uh...shook up, muddled up, leaving you dazed and confused but lovin' it kind of band? Ok...perhaps that's a bit much, maybe just downright unconventional would be more accurate.  Yes....that works.  I typically only select a couple handfuls or so from the playlist to include in my blog to give readers an idea as to whether this band is one they'd like to see play.  I did not stay for the entire show (sorry guys), but in just a little over one set, there were so many out of the ordinary tunes, I will include most of what I heard.

With a playlist from Charlie Daniels Band (Devil Went Down to Georgia) to Metallica (Seek and Destroy) you know it's anything but business as usual.  And how is it them white boys can rock Prince (Let's Go Crazy)....yeah, that's just 'crazy', isn't it? For a cold, snowy/rainy January night, Audio Hitmen enjoyed a good crowd and a busy dance floor. They've definitely got you in their 'sight', and will assault your ears with rock and roll sounds that will have you asking for more, more, more!

Jason told me he could take 'constructive' criticism....so...Jason...taking that to heart, I hope you can deal with this...here it is....could you possibly come up with a more diverse playlist? I don't think it's enough...ha! *wink, wink*
