Indy Band Review - Bands 4 Boobies - Radio Radio - Saturday, April 25, 2015

What do you get when you mix Indy's musicians with a breast cancer benefit? Bands 4 Boobies! B4B...great fun for a great cause! Radio Radio in Fountain Square provided the venue for this show, and despite the inclement weather, the turn out was sizable, as it was standing room only.  There were numerous goodies given away through a raffle, and four different bands donated their talents, entertaining the crowd throughout the night with a variety of musical artistry.

Starting off the evening was singer/songwriter Chris Wolf.  His acoustic guitar, singing and story-telling repertoire was unique, although outside of my realm of expertise to completely blog about.  However, it was an enjoyable experience, setting the stage so to speak for the rest of the show. You can learn more about him through his website at: http://chriswolfsongs.com.  Also, 'like' his Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/thechriswolf?fref=ts

Most of you know, I am partial to seeing ladies take the stage. In their 45-minute set, Curve Appeal performed original music along with cover tunes from the Eagles (Witchy Woman), Journey (Lights) and Marc Cohn (Walking In Memphis).

Curve appeal is:

Tracy Ditsworth - lead vocals
Amy Sikir - piano, back-up vocals
Sheila Walters Herring - ukulele, percussion, harmonica
and back-up vocals
Lia Treffman - bass, percussion, back-up vocals
Pattie Gregoty - saxophone, percussion, back-up vocals

As I have said before, it is a challenge for me to blog on bands that have original music, especially when I am seeing them for the first time and I'm not familiar with their songs.  I like this band's sound, and would love to see a full show.  The female vocalist, Arianah can certainly rock it! (love those front-ladies!) Although 'original', the band did perform one cover during their set, Tom Petty's 'Breakdown', and ended with one of their own, 'I Can't Find My Way Home', a bluesy sort of tune that truly rocks!

B of N are:

Mark Anthony
Arianah Brown
Jeff Derby
Chris McCombs
Jesse Roe

These guys have come into my blog scope twice already...great cover band!  If you have opportunity, see them play.  I do not think you will be disappointed, as you will hear a variety of music.  The last performers for the evening, AH rocked the house with 'A Flock of Seagulls', 'Billy Idol', 'Ramones', 'J. Geils Band', 'Devo', 'Metallica' and several others.  They are easily addictable! (is that a word?)

The focus of the event was to support and raise awareness for breast cancer, specifically on the local level.  Pink Ribbon Connection (PRC) is involved with this endeavor. (http://pinkribbonconnection.org).  Their mission is 'to provide emotional support, local resources and education to those touched by cancer across Indiana.'  Many women, especially those who are low income and dealing with breast cancer can obtain wigs, bras and scarves at no charge from this organization, so it is certainly a worthy cause to donate to and a beacon of hope for those battling this disease.

Bands 4 Boobies goal is to raise $6,000 this year for PRC, thus far mid-way to reaching that. B4B is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, which means all donations are tax deductible...just ask for a receipt!  100% of what you donate goes to PRC.  There is also an 'Indy Band Challenge'.  If you are a local musician, you can participate and help out...the challenge is to raise at least $100 when you are at a venue playing.  Donations can be sent to: bands4boobies@live.com.  You can also contact Jason Oldham at 317.508.0369 for further information on how to become involved. I think overall, Jason would agree this year and those previous have been a success. $15,000 raised so far in the last four years. There is still plenty of time to help this year and make plans for next year.  Much heartfelt thanks goes out to so many...Radio Radio for use of their premises, all the bands who played and all those who came out to help by donating.  Thank you Jason Oldham for all the time and effort it took to bring it together...that is no small task! Looking forward to the benefit show for 2016! Please support Indy's local musical talent and... rock on! See you next year!

There are close to sixty local bands here in Indy, ten of which I have now blogged...so I've got my work cut out for me this Spring and Summer.  This is the third time for me to blog on Jambox...so does that mean I'm partial to them? *smile* Well...I do really like these guys, yes...and I know there are many others who would agree.  Even back in the 80's, I had certain bands I liked to follow.  I know it was a great honor for Jambox to open for Autograph here in Indy.  It was a fun show for sure...a small, intimate feel provided in the 'concert room' at Southport Bar & Grill on Indy's south side.

The guys rocked out for about an hour with tunes from Journey (certainly a given), Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Starship, Yes, Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, Kansas, Boston, Toto, Rush, The Who, Head East and others.  Jambox is easy to like because they rock so well.  If you haven't had opportunity to see them, please do so...guaranteed to be a good time. Just since last November, Jambox has been on the local scene, and have developed a strong following.   You can catch them again at Southport Bar & Grill June 20th.  Last night it was turn up the Jambox, then turn it up with Autograph!

Autograph
Genre: American heavy metal (glam metal)

Many rock bands over the years have dealt with break-ups and replacing members, some successful, others not.  One of the most obvious and toughest to overcome is changing out a lead vocalist.  That is as much the sound as all the instruments, which are sound, but the voice is so specific.  One band that comes to mind that effectively managed this is AC/DC.  Autograph had a different line-up in the mid-80's when they started, which included a different vocalist, Steve Plunkett and at the time keyboardist Steve Isham.  Formed in 1983, hailing from Pasadena, California, five rock and rollin' guys rode a wave of success until 1989, when they left RCA (their record label at the time) and the original band fell apart.

Fast forward to the twenty-first century...2013, and we see a reunion form, now with two new guys, Simon Daniels, lead vocals/rhythm guitar, and Marc Wieland on drums, alongside original members Steve Lynch and Randy Rand. Perhaps the question is, can the music match the original Autograph style? Will it all fall into place once again? Can success repeat after nearly a two and a half decade gap? What will be different this time around? Well, there has to be new material, even though the old is a big part of who the band is.  Their 80's fans haven't forgotten their hits, but you cannot live everything in the past and move forward into the future, so some new stuff is necessary to keep it fresh, mixing it in with the former.

The 'new' Autograph is currently touring throughout the U.S. this Spring and Summer, hitting the small venues, headlining and using local talent for openers.  It seems to be working quite well for the guys, and the fans appreciate the intimacy.  The band is absolutely personable, allowing for 'meet and greet' after their show. I believe the whole experience is on a level of 'real' that just doesn't come with the big arena performances.  I think that's what fans want and need these days.

The night opened with a tune from the 1984 release 'Sign In Please', 'Deep End'.  Others from the same, included 'Send Her To Me', 'Cloud 10', 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me', and 'All I'm Gonna Take'. Also mixed in, 'Crazy World' and 'Blondes In Black Cars' ('That's The Stuff' - 1985), 'Dance All Night', 'She Never Looked That Good For Me', 'Bad Boy', 'When The Sun Goes Down', and 'Loud and Clear', the title track from their 1987 album, and their new 2015 release 'You Are Us, We Are You', rounded out the show, their final song being 'Turn Up The Radio'.  Southport Bar & Grill patrons were treated to a guitar solo by Mr. Lynch, and the evening moved right along. Fun was had and memories were made. I believe the transition to a different vocalist is working well for these guys, and I hope and expect to see a lot more come from them in the near future.  April 21st is set to release another single 'I Lost My Mind In America'. Check out their website: http://autographband.com/ for pictures, tour information and more.  I hope you get a chance to see them in your town. Be a part of the new experience. Turn it up and get rocked....get your Autograph on.

Chances are you know someone personally who has or is battling breast cancer.  In fact, 1 in 8 women  in the U.S. will develop this form of cancer by the age of 95.  About 1% of all breast cancer cases happen in men.  Much awareness has been raised regarding this disease, its cause, prevention and cure...much more needs to be done. This is your opportunity to help out and hear some great local musicians. 'Bands 4 Boobies' is in its 5th year and has raised nearly $15,000 thus far.  100% of proceeds benefit the 'Pink Ribbon Connection', (PRC) an organization that 'provides emotional support, local resources and education to those touched by breast cancer across Indiana.'  (http://pinkribbonconnection.org/)

Indy Concert Review: Jasmine Cain (CD Release Party) with Special Guest Audio Hitmen – Southport Bar & Grill - Saturday, April 11, 2015

I love seeing our local musical talent open for the national bands as it always makes for a pleasurable evening! Audio Hitmen is a fantastic band to catch, because what you get is a playlist you do not typically hear. I blogged these guys back at the end of January, and I really like ‘em, so this was a wonderful opportunity to have a repeat, as I still have so many other bands to blog, that getting to see one more than once probably won’t happen real often. It was a rockin’ night on Indy’s Southside as the Hitmen took the stage shortly after 9, rolling out with their ‘organized’ contract of songs starting with classic Billy Idol (Rebel Yell).

The night quickly moved along with about an hour of tunes from the Ramones (I Wanna Be Sedated), Cake (The Distance), Weezer (Beverly Hills), Foo Fighters (All My Life), and classics from ‘A Flock of Seagulls’, ‘Prince’, ‘The Black Keys’, ‘Kings of Leon’, ‘Aerosmith’ and numerous others. You definitely need to catch an entire AH show to get the total assault effect…you know, it should be illegal to have this much fun…yeehaw!

Jasmine Cain
Hometown: Nashville, TN
Genre: Rock
Certainly a lot of good music has come out of Nashville over the decades, but it is especially nice to see some great rock ‘n roll…total rock ‘n roll emerge from this southern town. I’m a tad partial to the ladies taking front and center on the stage, and Jasmine has a unique rock style which made me think of Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart), Joan Jett, and even before I read it on Ms. Cain’s Facebook page, Janis Joplin. What’s better is seeing her performance right here in Indy…the ‘Crossroads of America’.  Jasmine has a stage presence that warrants attention, along with her amiable personality, solid vocals and energy, she keeps her audience involved with the show.  It’s been a long time since I experienced not only a lengthy drum solo (Zach Ballard) but also a guitar solo (Benjamin Johnson) all wrapped up in a little over two hours of play.  Performing tunes from her new release ‘White Noise’, which included ‘Nightingale’, ‘Highway Prophet’, ‘1995’, and ‘Any Given Sunday’…Ms. Cane, who has earned 'female rock vocalist' for the last four years in Nashville, noted that this was their first time ever doing an all original show.  Other songs included, ‘Whiskey Kiss’, ‘Run Away’, ‘Fool’s Gold’, ‘Into The Gray’, and many others.  Kevin Bebout, one of ‘The Crew’ provides occasional relief on bass guitar for Jasmine.  She also performed renditions from tunes by Stevie Nicks and Janice Joplin during the night.

So whether or not you were ever into physics, the many frequencies and  equal intensity of your music, however you define ‘White Noise’, it should be Jasmine Cain…I hope you get a chance to hear it!
